Description:
The Staghorn Fern (Platycerium) is an exotic and unique fern known for its impressive, antler-like fronds that resemble stag antlers, hence the name. This epiphytic fern grows naturally on trees in tropical climates, where it attaches itself to branches and absorbs moisture from the air. Staghorn Ferns are prized for their ornamental beauty and are often displayed mounted on wood or in hanging baskets, making them a striking feature in any plant collection. As an air-purifying plant, it helps improve indoor air quality while adding a touch of tropical flair.
Watering:
Staghorn Ferns prefer to be watered thoroughly, but they don't like to sit in water. Water when the surface of the growing medium (or moss if mounted) feels dry to the touch. It’s important not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot. When watering, gently pour water over the fern, ensuring it soaks through the medium or moss. In the Winter months, reduce watering frequency as the plant's growth slows. If mounted, a light misting may be needed more frequently to maintain moisture levels.
Fertilizer:
Feed with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (Spring and Summer). Use a low-nitrogen fertilizer to prevent excessive growth. In the Fall and Winter, reduce fertilizing, as the plant enters a period of slower growth. Over-fertilizing can lead to burnt fronds, so be sure to follow the recommended dilution instructions.
Lighting:
Staghorn Ferns prefer bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the delicate fronds, so it's best to keep them in a spot with filtered light. A North- or East-facing window is ideal. While they can tolerate some lower light conditions, growth may slow, and the fern may not develop as robustly.
Temperature:
Thrives in temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Staghorn Ferns are sensitive to cold temperatures and should be kept in areas with a steady warm temperature, avoiding drafts and areas with temperatures below 50°F (10°C). They appreciate consistent warmth for optimal growth.
Humidity:
Staghorn Ferns thrive in high humidity, making them ideal for bathrooms or tropical-themed indoor spaces. If your home is dry, increase humidity by misting the fronds regularly, using a humidity tray, or placing the fern near a humidifier. This will help maintain the lush, green appearance of the fronds. They do not require a lot of direct contact with water when mounted, but higher humidity will encourage better growth.
