Description:
Philodendron raphidophora 'Dragon's Tail' is a stunning climbing plant known for its long, narrow, deeply lobed leaves that resemble the tail of a dragon, hence the name. The plant’s leaves have a rich, glossy green colour, and as it matures, it can develop fenestrations (splits) along the leaf edges. This variety is a beautiful and striking addition to any space, whether grown on a trellis, in a hanging basket, or allowed to trail. It’s relatively easy to care for and grows best in a humid, warm environment, making it ideal for adding a tropical vibe to your home.
Watering:
Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry to the touch. Like most Philodendrons, it prefers to have its soil kept consistently moist but not soggy. Be sure the pot has good drainage to allow excess water to escape. During the cooler months, reduce watering as the plant’s growth slows. It’s best to let the plant dry out slightly between waterings rather than keeping it constantly moist.
Fertilizer:
Feed with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (Spring and Summer). In the Fall and Winter, cut back on fertilizing as the plant’s growth slows. Over-fertilizing can cause leggy growth or burnt leaf tips, so use fertilizer moderately.
Lighting:
Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some lower light conditions. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the delicate leaves, so it’s best to place it in a spot with filtered light. If kept in low light, growth may slow down, but the plant will remain healthy. A spot near a North- or East-facing window is ideal for optimal growth.
Temperature:
Thrives in temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Philodendron raphidophora 'Dragon's Tail' is sensitive to cold, so keep it in a warm environment and avoid placing it in areas with drafts or temperatures below 50°F (10°C). A consistent, warm environment is key to its success.
Humidity:
Prefers moderate to high humidity. Low humidity can cause browning leaf tips and slow growth. To maintain the best conditions, mist the leaves occasionally, use a humidity tray, or place the plant near a humidifier. High humidity will help the plant grow strong and healthy, especially when it is actively growing.
