Guiding Question: How do plants survive?
Grade: 1
Categories: Living Systems, Scientific Methods
Description: Students become “plant scientists” and investigate how plants survive. Through hands-on centers, students examine plant parts, compare the textures and smells of leaves, explore soil and worms. Students will have the opportunity to use magnifying tools or microscopes to look closely at plant samples.
Students learn that an investigation is a careful way of answering a question by observing, comparing, recording, and sharing information. They use sight, touch, and smell to gather evidence. Students record their observations in a science journal and draw a kokedama, which they take home.
Duration: 90min
Volunteers: TBD
Teacher Provides: Pencils, crayons or colour pencils, hand wash station, tables for activity stations
Take Home: Kokedama and observation journal
