Grade 5
5LS - Living Systems
Curricular Highlights
Guiding Question: How are organisms supported by vital biological processes and systems?
Grade: 5
Categories: Living Systems, Scientific Methods
Description: Students investigate how plants use internal systems to support growth, survival, and other vital biological processes. They explore how roots absorb water and mineral nutrients, how xylem transports these materials to the stems and leaves, and how phloem distributes sugars produced during photosynthesis to growing and storage areas throughout the plant. Students use microscopes and other observation tools to examine plant tissues, leaf veins, and vascular bundles, then use their evidence to explain how roots, stems, and leaves function as one connected system.
At the end of the lesson, each student examines a kokedama, identifies its plant structures, records care requirements, and receives the kokedama to take home.
Duration: 90min
Volunteers:
Teacher Provides: Pencils, crayons or colour pencils, hand wash station, tables for activity stations
Take Home: Kokedama and observation journal
